Cecilia joined the group in 2015 during the preparation of a successful application for funding to the Yorkshire Cancer Research Grant entitled “Curative treatment modalities of early stage Non Small Cell Lung Cancer: Effect on Patient Reported Outcomes of Video Assisted Thoracoscopic (VATS) Resection and Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR)”, which she is currently working on. Cecilia trained in medicine and specialized in Thoracic Surgery in Italy with a Thesis investigating the residual quality of life after lung cancer surgical treatment. She is in the GMC Specialist Registry since 2014.

She worked as Trust Doctor in the Thoracic Department of Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust where she was able to combine her clinical skills with the research drive, implementing and standardizing the routine collection of quality of life information in lung cancer patients.

Research interests

The main focus of Cecilia’s research has been since the undergraduate period on studying the effects on patients reported outcomes of the lung cancer surgical treatments.

In June 2012, she had the European Society Of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) Young Investigator Award for the best presentation in the field of thoracic surgery research, for the project entitled: Preoperative quality of life predicts survival following pulmonary resection in stage I non-small cell lung cancer. She conducted methodological projects on the selection of PROMs instruments culminating in a publication entitled “Prospective external convergence evaluation of two different quality-of-life instruments in lung resection patients”.

She is a member of the The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality Of Life Group (EORTC-QoL) for many years and she is currently co-investigator in a multicenter Phase III study updating the EORTC questionnaire for assessing quality of life in lung cancer patients (QLQ-LC13).

Cecilia has lead multicenter studies evaluating across countries the patients’ satisfaction after surgical treatments for lung cancer.

Teaching

Cecilia is co-leading the 4th year medical student teaching OSCE and she is the principal supervisor for two Extended Student-led Research or Evaluation Project (ESREP) projects on PROMs in lung cancer at the University of Leeds, and co-supervisor in other two.
